Controversial Album Covers II (Pt. 10)

Note: This is a bit out of order due to me finding this cover last night. Order will be restored tomorrow.

Year: 1988

Gun ‘N’ Roses: G ‘N’ R Lies

The Problem: The album cover depicts a newspaper article with various text written on it, alongside images. The original version of the album cover included the headlines “Wife-beating has been around for 10,000 years” and “Ladies, welcome to the dark ages”, which both become very controversial, due to the misogyny nature of both sentences. They were quickly replaced with “Lies Lies Lies” and “Elephant Gives Birth to Midget” respectively.

My Take: The titles could be interpreted into many things. “Wife-beating has been around for 10,000 years” could just be stating a sad, but true fact. They didn’t say it was good or anything. They just said it’s been around for many years. (Sad, I know.) For, “Ladies, welcome to the dark ages,” that could be put into a completely different meaning. But then again, this is G ‘N’ R, so no telling. One thing is certain, it was a nightmare to find this version of the cover. I kept finding the censored version and that just wouldn’t fit with this display, now would it?
