Moby Grape: Moby Grape

The Problem: Moby Grape’s album Moby Grape (1967) raised eyebrows because of the placement of drummer Don Stevenson’s middle finger (center). On later albums the finger was airbrushed out of the photo.

My Take: Was Stevenson flipping the bird a joke? Did someone piss him off earlier? The look on his face seems to suggest that. None of them look too happy to be taking the picture. Maybe Stevenson was flipping off the camera for the band. Who can say? I wonder what he was thinking at the time. Hm…
